La Sardaigne est la deuxième plus grande île d'Italie et est située au milieu de la Méditerranée. Il se trouve immédiatement au sud de la Corse (qui appartient à la France). Les Grecs l'appelaient Hyknusa ou Ichnussa (Ιχνουσσα), du grec Ichnos (empreinte du pied humain) en raison de sa similitude avec une grande empreinte; cependant, la Sardaigne tire son nom du latin Sardaigne, comme l'appelaient les Romains. En fait, le nom de Sardaigne était déjà connu des Phéniciens, comme en témoigne la Nora Stele, le plus ancien document écrit trouvé dans l'ouest de la Sardaigne, précisément à Nora, où l'on lit b-šrdn = En Sardaigne.
